3 Tips to Make Your Job Search Suck Les

If there’s anything we’ve learned in the past two years, it’s that our time is precious and valuable and you don’t want to spend tens of thousands of hours of your life at a job that you don’t enjoy. The job search can be time consuming, overwhelming, and let’s be honest, you may be feeling defeated at times. Here are three tips to make your job search suck less!

Tips for Your Job Search

Get Clear on What You Want.

Whether this means it’s time to make a career change or it’s just time to find a new employer (with a new boss!), you deserve a job where you feel fulfilled and appreciated - where your career path aligns with and supports your unique goals & priorities.

Pull out that pen and paper and let’s make some lists. Do some self-reflection and review your strengths and weaknesses; list out pros and cons to your current job or career; list out pros and cons to potential companies or positions. What patterns do you see? These patterns are pointing you toward what you love (and hate) in your career. The better you know yourself the more likely you’ll find a job with greater satisfaction!

Remember to get clear on what benefits or perks you want, too. This could include the option to work remotely, health benefits, PTO, continuing education, tech perks, growth opportunities, and more. It’s not only important to know what you want out of your career to be more fulfilling, but also your must haves and bonuses to sweeten the deal.

Research

Once you know what you want, it’s time to do your research. Start by finding which companies offer the position(s) you want. Be sure to read the job descriptions and expectations in detail so you understand what the company wants and to ensure that you align with that, too.

Take time to Google the company, get to know their mission and background, and even check out their social media profiles or podcasts. This will not only give you extra insight into what and who they are, but will also help you with any questions you may have. Investigate the company’s Glassdoor page, too, as this will help you get a feel for the company culture.

Network

Networking – in person and online – is a key part of a successful job search.

Networking also helps you get a good idea of what jobs are out there and available so you can be more strategic in your job search. Social media is a great tool for networking! Don’t be afraid to reach out to your LinkedIn connections and Facebook friends to ask them about opportunities that they know of or for insight into working at a certain company. Connect with people who are doing jobs that interest you or are working at your dream company.

You want to be top of mind as people are building out their team and networking will help you do just that. Remember that hiring managers love candidates who are recommended - often even more than sorting through resumes that come in via a career website.
