Job Search Hack: Google + LinkedIn

In February, Melinda Lewis wrote an interesting article on the Medium about hacking the job search: How to Hack Your Job Search in Seconds. I love her tip so let’s build it out even more.

She talks about how LinkedIn has not been the place where she’s received her job offers. Generally, I agree. But also, that’s not how I think you optimize your LinkedIn usage. Instead, she suggests that Google is a great way to find opportunities. “You can search any keyword or skill plus the word “job” (i.e. Marketing Manager Job) and find postings not only aggregated from job sites but also the company’s site itself. You can also set up alerts, set geography parameters and save jobs.” Again, I agree. Start there!

And here’s where LinkedIn comes in.

Follow her tips above to find the opportunities then…

  1. When you find one of interest, then you hop over to LinkedIn

  2. Search the company and see if any of your connections work there.

  3. If yes, send them a note. If they’ve got an email listed on LinkedIn, go for that. If not, the messenger is fine. Let them know you saw the posting and would like to talk with them about <the company culture, their experience working there, etc.>

  4. If no, see if you have any 2nd connections and start working through your existing connections for an introduction

  5. This is a “rinse and repeat” kind of process for the postings you find.
