What helps a candidate stand out?
A standout candidate is someone who has strong phone presence and someone who is prepared to speak about everything on their resume in a streamlined manner. These days, it's also important to be genuine and real during interviews. As a recruiter, we can sense your energy and we gravitate towards authenticity. While it is key to remain professional, remember to show your personality as well!
What’s your biggest resume tip?
Keep your resume to one page (if less than 10 years of experience)) and use bullet format (it's easier on the eye).
What’s your biggest interview tip?
Come prepared to discuss ALL your experience and answer situational questions that gauge your ability to be adaptable, a team player, and someone who can take initiative.
What’s your biggest networking tip?
Go for it all! I was able to transition careers from higher education to HR by sending an acquaintance a Facebook message and asked for an informational interview. That opened the doors for me to make the move!
How do you feel about cover letters?
I feel covers letters can be used in a case by case basis - it also depends on the industry. From working in higher education, mostly every application required a cover letter. Other industries skip it and will review your resume right away.
What’s the best piece of advice you can give to someone in their job search?
Hone in on what exactly you want to do because it will help determine where you put your time and effort. Stay resilient and network - you never know what it can bring!
How can a new team member best distinguish themselves?
Don't be afraid to ask questions! Make an effort to be a part of the team whether it is contributing to meetings and sharing ideas.
